Blink Doorbell Audio & Two-Way Talk: How It Performs in Real Life

Blink doorbell has a two-way audio system ( speak and hear) to communicate with visitors at the door. Users use the Blink Home Monitor app, Amazon Echo Show display, and Alexa to talk. Traffic, animal voices, and noise do not affect the audio quality of the Blink doorbell. Many people have shared their concern over the external speaker as a bit faint. Lags in voice transmission and distorted voice are also common due to a poor wifi connection. Set up the Sync module to improve the audio quality. This module system preserves battery from draining and transfers voice without being distorted. Adjust the volume and test the sound from the app to avoid troubleshooting issues. Install the 2.4 GHZ wifi network for Blink doorbells for smooth communication.

What Audio Features Does the Blink Doorbell Offer?

Here are the four features of Blink Doorbell:

  1. Built-in Mic & Speaker: Blink doorbell has built-in mic and speakers to pick up and transmit voice. These speakers and microphones are the fundamentals for better two-way communication.
  2. Two-Way Talk: Many people use the Blink Home Monitor app to communicate with the person at the door. Go to the devices and search for the video doorbell to open the live view. There is an icon on the left side to talk to the visitor. Tap to communicate and re-tap to stop the audio transfer.
  3. Adjustable Volume: Users can adjust the notification sound, press announcements, and chime volume via the app. Open the app and navigate to settings to customize them. Apart from this, notification sounds are also customizable from the app.
  4. Noise Cancellation: The Blink doorbell 1st-Gen didn’t have any nice cancellation features at first. Amazon has launched it with the Blink video doorbell 2nd-Gen. It cancels the animal or strong wind sounds to improve the audio experience.

How Clear Is the Two-Way Talk in Real-Life Use?

People often experience lags, distorted voices, and minimal latency when communicating. Background noise and poor voice cancellation make it hard for the visitors to understand. Blink video doorbell is good for quick talks like deliveries, instructions, or saying “coming” to the visitor. The weather, the mobile phone’s speaker, and poor wifi affect the audio transmission. Blink video doorbell works like a walkie-talkie under a Half-Duplex Communication system. It allows only one person to talk at a time. The voice overlaps when they both speak, and it becomes difficult to understand.

How to Optimize Two-Way Talk Performance

Make sure to set up a strong wifi network and place the router within 20 to 30 feet of the doorbell. Install the module, router, and doorbell within a 100-meter radius for better support. Update the app over time to reduce the troubleshooting problems and lags. Test the audio in different conditions and run an app test to adjust the volume. Use the doorbell covers to protect it from extreme weather and interference. Prefer the 1.5V lithium batteries for better output and a consistent power supply.

How Does Blink Doorbell Compare With Competitors?

Blink doorbell is a budget-friendly device with basic noise cancellation compared to Ring and Nest. It has high latency and wifi connection problems, whereas Ring and Nest have low latency. Blink doorbell has a half-duplex communication style, and Ring has the full-duplex, where the visitor and the owner can talk at the same time. This doorbell lacks AI voice integration like Nest, which improves the audio quality.

What Are the Limitations of Blink Doorbell Audio?

Here are the three limitations of the Blink doorbell:

  1. Noisy Environments: The Blink doorbell has a basic noise cancellation system, and users often report the background disturbances.
  2. Weather Impact: Rechargeable batteries with 1.2V increase self-discharge in summer and hold the power in cells in winter, which affects the doorbell performance. Set up the doorbell in the porch area and install the non-rechargeable batteries to withstand the weather changes.
  3. Wi-Fi Dependency: Blink two-way audio depends on a stable wifi connection to run and transmit voices. Poor wifi connection leads to lags and voice distortions. Set up the router as a central body, a sync module, and a doorbell for better connection.

What are the Troubleshooting Common Audio Issues

Here are the three common troubleshooting audio issues:

  1. Static or delayed audio: Make sure to check the wifi connection, restart the app, or clear the cache to resolve the delayed or statistic audio issues.
  2. One-way audio: Check the microphone and speaker permissions of the Blink Home Monitor app to solve this issue. Get technical assistance if this doesn't work.
  3. Echo or feedback: Move the mobile away from the doorbell if it's too close to solve the echo issues.

My name is Ricky and I have been a mechanical engineer for 25 years. My 3D-printing journey started when I purchased my first doorbell camera. Once I installed it, I knew I needed to do something different. I wanted to see my doormat where delivery drivers would bring my items and I didn’t want to scroll through all the events. Due to my dissatisfaction, I started designing my own doorbell mounts. After some trial and error, I finally came up with the perfect mount solutions to meet multiple issues. We guarantee we have a doorbell mount on our shop to meet your specific concern.
