Replace dead TekTone apartment intercom faceplates with a clean cover plate. Common in apartment building units built 1985 through 2010.

TekTone is the most common brand for apartment building intercom systems in the US. Tenants of older apartments often have a beige plastic TekTone intercom station with a buzzer and a "talk" button next to their entry door. When the system gets retired or you move into a unit with a non-working station, this covers the wall opening.

✔ Outdoor-rated PETG, made in the USA. Every plate is 3D-printed to-order from UV-stabilized PETG that will not fade, yellow, or crack in the sun. PETG holds up to outdoor exposure for years, tolerates temperature swings from -40°F to 140°F, and accepts paint after a quick scuff-sand if you want a custom color. Default is matte black; specify Color Change Request at checkout for white, tan, brown, or brick-color.

Compatibility & Sizing

Pick the variant that matches your old TekTone model. The variant dropdown also shows the screw spacing right next to each option. If you are not sure, text us a photo at 833-326-6868 and we will confirm.

Pricing & Options (Adders Stack)

Each plate starts at the Base Price above (Blank cutout + Countersunk Round Holes). The cutout and hole-style options each add a small amount that stacks:

Option Adder
Blank (countersunk mounting screws only) included
Doorbell Pilot Holes (No Wire Pass-Through) +$1.50
Doorbell Pilot Holes + Wire Pass-Through +$3.00
Countersunk Round Holes (Vertical Axis) included
Vertical Slots (Vertical Axis) +$2.00
Horizontal Axis Mounting (Sideways Intercom) +$5.00
4-Corner Screws (For No Old Holes) +$3.00

Example: a 7.5" x 5.5" plate (base $40) with Doorbell Pilot Holes + Wire and Vertical Slots = $40 + $3.00 + $2.00 = $45.00.

2-Piece Construction

The IR103E / IR104E / IR105E (Larger), IR203E / IR204E / IR205E (Larger) variant(s) are too tall to print as a single piece, so they ship as two halves with a horizontal seam across the middle of the plate. The two halves screw together using small screws included in the hardware kit.

  • You will see a small horizontal seam at the join where the two halves meet. The seam is structural, not a defect.
  • Painting the plate after assembly minimizes the visual appearance of the seam.
  • For outdoor installs, apply a thin bead of clear silicone or paintable acrylic caulk along the seam line to seal out moisture.
  • Once screwed together, the plate behaves like a single rigid piece.

How to Measure Your Old Box

Two measurements to take: the screw-hole center-to-center distance (so we drill them in the right spot), and the wall-opening height × width (so we know how big to make the plate). See the schematics below.

Diagram showing how to measure center-to-center screw hole spacing on an old intercom

Step 1. Measure screw center-to-center distance

Diagram showing how to measure the wall opening to pick the right cover plate size

Step 2. Measure wall opening; pick plate at least 1" larger

  1. Remove the old intercom faceplate — usually 2 or 4 screws around the edge. Don't worry about the wires, just leave them tucked behind.
  2. Measure the wall opening (height × width) — this is the hole in the drywall, not the box. The plate has to cover this with at least 1/2" of overlap on every side.
  3. Measure the screw hole center-to-center distance — the existing screws or threaded inserts that held the old intercom. Vertical AND horizontal spacing matters.
  4. Decide on hole style (4 choices): (a) Countersunk Round Holes for exact vertical-mounted spacing; (b) Vertical Slots for vertical-mounted +/- 1/8 inch tolerance; (c) Horizontal Axis Mounting for sideways-mounted intercoms; (d) 4-Corner Screws if your original screw holes are unusable (stripped, lost, drilled into mortar) - the plate gets 4 corner holes instead and you mount it to the wall/frame/brick around your old box. 4-Corner Screws requires a plate at least 1 inch wider AND taller than your old opening - pick the Larger plate size variant for any model.
  5. Note whether your wires need a pass-through hole — will any wires come through the plate, or are they all dead/capped behind?
  6. Text us a photo at 833-326-6868 if you are not sure which variant matches.

Cutout / Pilot Holes (Option 2)

Three choices for what comes pre-drilled in the plate, beyond the mounting screws that hold it to the wall:

  • Blank - Countersunk Mounting Screws Only — Just the cover plate with countersunk screw holes to mount it to your wall. No doorbell pilot holes and no wire pass-through hole. Pick this for a clean cover with nothing else attached.
  • Doorbell Pilot Holes (No Wire Pass-Through) — Pre-drilled pilot holes for mounting a video doorbell directly to the plate. No center hole for wire pass-through, so wires must enter from behind the wall (or the doorbell is wireless/battery). Doorbell mounting screws included.
  • Doorbell Pilot Holes + Wire Pass-Through — Pre-drilled pilot holes for mounting a video doorbell, PLUS a center hole sized for low-voltage doorbell wires to pass through the plate. Doorbell mounting screws included.

Mounting Hole Style (Option 3)

Three choices for how the cover-plate mounting screws are oriented and shaped. Match this to how your old intercom was installed:

  • Countersunk Round Holes (Vertical Axis) — Round, countersunk holes precision-printed at the nominal screw center-to-center spacing (countersunk for flat-head mounting screws so they sit flush). Screw spacing is on the VERTICAL axis - top and bottom - matching intercoms mounted upright. Pick this if your measurement is exact and your old intercom was mounted vertically.
  • Vertical Slots (Vertical Axis) — Each screw hole is a 1/4 inch vertical slot instead of a round hole. Gives you 1/8 inch of wiggle room up and 1/8 inch down if your old screw spacing is slightly off from the nominal. Still on the VERTICAL axis. Recommended when you are not 100% sure of the measurement.
  • Horizontal Axis Mounting (Sideways Intercom) — For old intercoms that were mounted SIDEWAYS - the plate mounting screw holes are on the HORIZONTAL axis (left-right) instead of the standard vertical axis. If you pick this AND a Doorbell Pilot Holes cutout variant, the doorbell pilot holes will be oriented on the VERTICAL axis so a modern doorbell still installs upright.
  • 4-Corner Screws (For No Old Holes) — For when the original intercom screw holes are NOT usable - stripped, lost, drilled into mortar, or the wood/threaded inserts are gone. Instead of matching your old screw spacing, the plate gets 4 screw holes located 1/4 inch from each corner. You screw through these into the wall, frame, or brick AROUND your old box opening. Requires a plate at least 1 inch wider AND taller than your original box opening so the corner screws have material to bite into. Pick the Larger plate size variant for any model when you select this option.
🛠 Hardware included. Every plate ships with 2-4 black flat-head countersunk #6 mounting screws for attaching the plate to your wall or existing electrical box. 2-piece plates include 2-3 small screws to join the two halves at the seam. If you select either Doorbell Pilot Holes cutout variant, the kit also includes the appropriate doorbell mounting screws, ready to attach your video doorbell directly to the plate. No need to buy additional hardware.

Installation

Tools needed: #2 Phillips driver. Drill optional. Painter's caulk optional. Multi-tester (only if any wires inside the box might be live).

What's in the box: Cover plate (1 or 2 pieces depending on size), 2-4 black flat-head countersunk #6 mounting screws for attaching the plate to your wall, and if you picked either Doorbell Pilot Holes cutout variant, the matching doorbell mounting screws. 2-piece plates also include 2-3 small screws for the seam join.

  1. Turn off power at the breaker if any wires inside the box are live.
  2. Remove the old intercom faceplate and cap any wires you do not need with wire nuts.
  3. (2-piece plates only) Screw the two halves together along the seam using the small screws included for that purpose. Hand-tight is enough. Optional: thin bead of clear silicone along the seam line for outdoor moisture protection.
  4. Position the plate over the opening — line up with existing screw holes (or drill new ones). Slotted variant gives you 1/8" of vertical wiggle.
  5. Drive the included #6 screws through the plate-mount holes into your wall or box. Hand-tight is enough.
  6. (Doorbell Pilot Holes variants only) Attach your video doorbell directly to the plate using the included doorbell mounting screws.
  7. Caulk the perimeter with paintable acrylic if installing outdoors. Skip the bottom edge for drainage.
  8. Paint to match your wall if desired.

FAQ

Will this fit my exact intercom?
Pick the variant matching your TekTone model name. The variant dropdown shows the screw spacing for each model. If you are unsure, text a photo of the old intercom to 833-326-6868 and we will confirm. Our Replacement Guarantee covers wrong-size swaps at no cost.
Which hole style should I pick?
Four choices based on how your old intercom was installed: (1) Countersunk Round Holes if mounted vertically and your measurement is exact; (2) Vertical Slots if vertical but you are within 1/8 inch or unsure of spacing - the slots give 1/4 inch of total tolerance; (3) Horizontal Axis Mounting if your old intercom was mounted sideways; (4) 4-Corner Screws if your original screw holes are unusable (stripped, lost, drilled into mortar) - the plate gets 4 holes 1/4 inch from each corner and you screw into the wall/frame around the old opening. Requires the Larger plate size for that model.
Will the PETG fade in the sun?
No. We use UV-stabilized outdoor-grade PETG that holds up to direct sunlight for years without yellowing, fading, or getting brittle. PETG also tolerates temperature swings from -40°F to 140°F.
Can I paint these?
Yes. PETG paints well with any standard latex or acrylic paint after a quick scuff-sand with 220-grit. Default plates ship in matte black; specify Color Change Request at checkout for white, tan, brown, or brick-color.
Are the doorbell mounting screws included?
Yes — if you pick either Doorbell Pilot Holes cutout variant, the kit includes the doorbell mounting screws ready to attach your doorbell directly to the plate. You also get 2-4 flat-head countersunk #6 wall-mount screws. No additional hardware needed.
How is the 2-piece plate held together?
Plates over 8 inches tall ship as 2 pieces with a horizontal seam at mid-height because they exceed our printer bed. The two halves screw together with small screws included. You will see a small seam at the join; painting the plate after assembly minimizes its appearance. For outdoor installs, caulk the seam with clear silicone for moisture protection.
What if my wires still need to come through the plate?
Pick the Doorbell Pilot Holes + Wire Pass-Through variant. It has a center hole for low-voltage doorbell wires or chime feeds.
What if my opening size or screw spacing doesn't match any standard variant?
Check our Custom-Size Intercom Cover Plate listing for in-between sizes (5x4, 6x5, 7x5, 8x7, 9x6, 11x7). Or text us at 833-326-6868 and we can fully custom-print a plate to your dimensions.
