Modern thermostats are far smaller than the ones they replace. Take down an old mercury dial or a wide programmable unit and what is left on the wall is an outline: unpainted drywall, torn wallpaper, stray anchor holes, and often an electrical box the new thermostat cannot hide. This plate is a flat PETG cover that goes on first and hides all of it, giving the new thermostat a clean, flat, level surface to mount to. Rather than picking the nearest stock size, you type in the exact height and width you measured — anything from 3 inches to 12 inches — plus the exact center-to-center screw spacing you need, and it is printed to order to those numbers. Build Your Plate

Everything about this plate is set by what you type into the option boxes above the Add to Cart button. There are no fixed sizes to round up to. Your price is worked out from the size and options you choose and is calculated when the item is added to your cart.

  1. Plate Height and Plate Width — any value from 3" to 12" in 1/4" steps, set independently. A 6-1/4" x 4-3/4" plate is just as ordinary an order as a 6" x 5".
  2. Mounting Hole Layout — two holes on the vertical axis (the default, and what a single-gang box needs), two holes on the horizontal axis, 4-corner screws when there is no box or the old holes are unusable, or no mounting holes at all for a blank plate you drill on site.
  3. Hole Spacing — type the center-to-center measurement to the 1/16". For a standard single-gang box that is 3.281. This box only appears when you have asked for two holes.
  4. Center Wire Pass-Through Hole — say yes and your thermostat wires come cleanly through the face of the plate. Almost every thermostat install needs this.
  5. Device Pilot Holes — optional pre-drilled holes so a thermostat base, sensor or keypad screws straight onto the plate. Say yes and a box appears for the make and model.

What Is Behind Your Wall — and What to Type In

Pull the old thermostat off and one of three things is staring back at you. Here is the layout and the spacing to enter for each:

How to Measure

  1. Turn off power at the breaker for the furnace or air handler before you touch the thermostat.
  2. Take the old thermostat and its base off the wall. Label the wires if the old unit did not, and tape them to the wall so they cannot slip back into the cavity.
  3. Measure the area you need covered — the discoloured outline, old anchor holes, torn paper, and any opening. Write down height and width.
  4. Add at least 1/2" on every side and round to the nearest 1/4". A marked-up area 4-1/4" tall by 5-1/8" wide becomes a 5-1/2" x 6-1/4" plate.
  5. Check your new thermostat’s footprint. The plate has to be bigger than the thermostat base or the base will overhang the edge. Round thermostats like the Nest Learning need the plate to be wider than the dial diameter.
  6. Measure the screw spacing center to center, and note whether the two screws run up-and-down or side-to-side. Standard single-gang tabs are 3.281" apart vertically.

Mounting Hole Layout — How the Plate Attaches to the Wall

  • 2 Holes — Vertical Axis (default). Countersunk round holes top and bottom at the spacing you type, so flat-head screws sit flush against the plate. Type 3.281 for a standard single-gang box.
  • 2 Holes — Horizontal Axis. Same thing rotated, for old anchor holes that sit side by side.
  • Vertical Slots instead of round holes. Each hole becomes a 1/4" slot with roughly 1/8" of play up and down — useful when the plate has to sit dead level and your measurement is approximate.
  • 4-Corner Screws. Four countersunk holes 1/4" in from each corner, anchored into drywall or studs around the opening. This is the right pick when there is no electrical box, when the box is a double-gang, or when the old holes are stripped. Order the plate at least 1" larger than the opening in both directions.
  • No Mounting Holes. A completely blank plate. The hole spacing box disappears and you drill it yourself on site.

Holes Through the Face — Wires and Device Mounting

Two separate on/off choices, so you can have either, both, or neither:

  • Center Wire Pass-Through Hole. A hole through the middle of the plate for the thermostat wires to reach the front. Say yes for essentially every live thermostat install — the only time to skip it is when you are covering an abandoned opening and nothing needs to come through.
  • Device Pilot Holes. Pre-drilled holes on the face so a thermostat base, remote sensor, keypad or any other small device screws directly onto the plate. Tell us the make and model in the text box and we drill that pattern. Most people skip this and simply run the thermostat’s own screws through the plate into the box behind it — either approach works.

Installation

Tools: tape measure, #2 Phillips driver, level. Drill and paintable caulk optional.

In the box: your made-to-order plate and the black flat-head countersunk #6 screws for the layout you chose — two for a vertical pair, four for the corner layout, plus drywall anchors when there is no box behind the wall. Your thermostat’s own base screws are not included; use the ones that came with it.

  1. Measure and order. With the old thermostat still on the wall, note the area you need covered. Pull it off, measure the outline height and width, add at least 1/2 inch on every side, and enter those numbers on this page along with your screw spacing.
  2. Kill the power. Switch off the breaker feeding the furnace or air handler before you pull the thermostat. Thermostat wiring is low voltage but the equipment it controls is not.
  3. Remove the old thermostat. Take the thermostat off its base, then unscrew the base from the wall. Label the wires first if the old thermostat did not, and tape them to the wall so they cannot fall back into the cavity.
  4. Dry-fit the plate. Hold the plate over the opening and confirm it covers the whole outline with margin on all four sides, and that the screw holes line up with your box tabs or your marked anchor points.
  5. Feed the wires through. Pull the thermostat wires out through the center pass-through hole before you set the plate flat against the wall.
  6. Fasten the plate. Drive the included flat-head countersunk #6 screws into the gang box tabs, or into wall anchors for the no-box layout. Hand-tight only — overtightening can dimple the plate. Use a level here: the plate sets the angle the thermostat will sit at.
  7. Mount the thermostat base. Screw your thermostat’s own base onto the front of the plate using the screws that came with it, feeding the wires through as you go. If you ordered device pilot holes, they are already there.
  8. Wire, seat and finish. Land the wires per your thermostat’s instructions, seat the thermostat on its base, and restore power at the breaker. Optionally caulk the plate perimeter with paintable acrylic and paint to match the wall.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size plate should I order?
Measure the discolored outline, anchor holes and any wall opening the old thermostat left behind, then add at least 1/2 inch on every side. Order anything from 3 to 12 inches on either side in 1/4-inch steps. Also check your new thermostat's own footprint - the plate has to be bigger than the thermostat base or the base will hang over the edge.
What screw spacing do I type in for a gang box?
A standard single-gang electrical box has its screw tabs 3.281 inches apart vertically, so type 3.281 and leave the layout on the vertical axis. A double-gang box is 3.281 inches vertical by 1.81 inches horizontal - pick 4-corner screws for that one and tell us the 3.281 x 1.81 pattern in the notes box.
What if there is no electrical box behind my thermostat, just a hole?
Choose 4-Corner Screws for the mounting hole layout. You get four countersunk holes a quarter inch in from each corner and you anchor the plate to solid drywall or studs around the opening. Order the plate at least an inch bigger than the opening on both dimensions so the corners have material to bite into.
Do I need the center wire pass-through hole?
Almost certainly yes. Thermostat wires have to come through the plate to reach the thermostat base, so unless you are using this purely as a blank cover over an abandoned opening, turn the center hole on.
What are device pilot holes for?
They are pre-drilled holes on the face of the plate so a thermostat base, sensor, keypad or any other device screws straight onto it.
