How to confirm: The SimpliSafe Video Doorbell has the SimpliSafe logo on the front, model number VPD301 on the back, and is added to the SimpliSafe app (the same app you use for your Gen 3 alarm panel). It's the only doorbell SimpliSafe sells. If your alarm system isn't a SimpliSafe Gen 3, the doorbell won't integrate with the panel — but it will still work standalone via the SimpliSafe app.

SimpliSafe households tend to be all-in on the SimpliSafe ecosystem: alarm panel, sensors, outdoor camera, and the doorbell. The VPD301 fits into the same app, the same monitoring service, and the doorbell can trigger alarm-panel actions. Smart person detection (vs. dumb motion) cuts down on false alerts so the SimpliSafe central station doesn't get spammed.

1080p at 162° wide is plenty for a typical porch — but only when the camera is aimed at the porch instead of the wall next to it. This 0-35° dual-axis swivel mount rotates the VPD301 in any direction up to 35°, supports the same 8-24V wiring, and locks permanently with set screws — important if your install is professionally monitored and you don't want false tamper alerts.

Customization & Add-Ons

Installing on the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell (VPD301)

  1. Verify Wiring + Chime Type:
    SimpliSafe VPD301 is NOT compatible with digital chimes. Confirm you have a mechanical chime AND 8-24V AC at the doorbell location with a 30VA-max transformer. If you have a digital chime, you'll need to bypass it with a chime power kit before mounting.
  2. Power Down: Turn the breaker off at the chime circuit. Verify with a tester at the existing doorbell wires before pulling them through the mount.
  3. Coordinate With Your Alarm System (If Applicable): If your VPD301 is integrated with a monitored Gen 3 SimpliSafe panel, briefly disarming during the swap is recommended — replacing the mount can register as a tamper event. Optionally call SimpliSafe central station to put the panel on test mode.
  4. Mount the Base: Pull the doorbell wires through the hole in the swivel base, position vertical or horizontal on your siding/trim, secure with #6 screws (PH2 driver). Anchors as needed.
  5. Attach the Swivel: Route the wires through the swivel center, attach to the base with four #4 / PH1 center screws.
  6. Connect & Mount the VPD301: Connect the two doorbell-circuit wires to the VPD301's screw terminals. Snap onto the bracket using the screws PROVIDED WITH THIS MOUNT (PH1 driver) — not SimpliSafe's stock plate.
  7. Pair / Re-Pair via SimpliSafe App: Restore power. Open the SimpliSafe app, add the doorbell (or re-add if it dropped during the swap). Re-add to your Gen 3 panel if it was integrated. Verify the live view, two-way audio, and smart person detection.
  8. Aim & Lock + Set Activity Zones: Live View → adjust the swivel until the 162° frame covers your porch top-to-bottom → tighten set screws. Then in the SimpliSafe app: configure Activity Zones to exclude the street and include just the porch path.

Mechanical chime essential: SimpliSafe will tell you upfront — VPD301 won't trigger digital chimes. The fix is a $20 chime power kit (Newhouse, JZHY brand on Amazon) that bypasses the chime entirely and powers the VPD301 directly. Common, painless workaround.
